Личност чија је појава у Фиренци највише помогла у преусмеравању тамошњег хуманизма са његовог првобитно реторичког нагласка није био Плето, него византијски професор Јован Аргиропулос, који је касније држао катедру грчке филозофије на фирентинском студијуму (1456-71). Аргиропулосова каријера може се поделити на три обимне фазе. Прва фаза је недовољно расветљена, услед посвемашњег недостатка извора, а одигравала се у Константинопољу, где је он предавао десетлеће или више пре пада византијског главног града у турске руке, 1453. Друга фаза, знатно дужа и значајнија за италијанску ренесансу, представља Аргиропулосово предавачко запослење у Фиренци, у време када је тај град био на врхунцу своје славе као хуманистичко средиште. А трећа фаза је у ствари кратко раздобље његовог боравка у Риму, где је неколико година предавао на тамошњем универзитету и где је напослетку умро.
