The essay examines the Novelle Galanti written by the libertine abbot Giovan Battista Casti: 48 long stories in octaves, published posthumously in 1804 and immediately listed on the Index of Forbidden Books, which enjoyed a huge publishing success in the nineteenth century (as well as the appreciation of Goethe, Stendhal and Byron). In the novellas, derived mostly from preexisting hypotexts in Italian and French, Casti sketched a moral and anthropological geography of the customs and mentality prevailing in the different countries of Italy and Europe. These characterizations largely correspond to imagological stereotypes, which, however, remain secondary to a cosmopolitan conception so that the mechanism that regulates human conduct is essentially universal, based on natural instincts tempered by reason.
