Abstract

This paper focuses on the status of women in South Africa after it gained independence. Furthermore, this paper aims to provide a detailed analysis of the relationship between men and women, white and coloured people after the period of colonization. The paper relies on the authorities of postcolonial theory such as Said and Bhabha. The change in living circumstances has reversed the previous system of power and switched roles. White man is now forced to get used to the fact that he is no longer a master, protected and superior, and that he could easily find himself in the role of a servant. Nevertheless, the change in the system of power has maintained women as a marginal category, which has to fight both white and coloured men to obtain its bit of freedom. Stereotypes and traditional narrowmindedness prevail, not allowing the existence of the ’other‘. Alone and independent woman in inner South Africa is doomed to the terror of the majority.
