Abstract

Nabokov’s first novel in the opus of sixteen announces the dominant narrative strategy of the writer – the analepses which probe times past. However, whilst evoking the past, the main character does not interweave segments of the past as the latter of Nabokov’s characters do, be they hidden or less hidden narrators. Control over memory, attention to detail, the delicate movements of recollected images and the sabotage of objective time in favour of individual time, mark the narrative chronology of everything Nabokov wrote after Mary.
