Cecilia Valdés o La Loma del Ángel and Martín Rivas are two classical novels of Spanish American literature. Both of them present the social stratification and ideology of 19th century in Cuban and Chilean societies respectively. The masculine characters of rich white men are conservatives and willing to maintain their social status and increase their fortunes. They are looking for access to political power by all means. The feminine characters are submissive to men authority and indifferent to political issues.
