SENTIMENTAL RHETORICS AND ITS “DEFAMILIARISATION”: PETRARCHISM AND ANTI-PETRARCHISM IN SOME FRENCH NARRATIVE WORKS OF THE XVI CENTURY

In this paper, basic characteristics of the aesthetics of emotional suffering, present in some early and late renaissance works of narrative prose are analysed in light of petrarchism and anti-petrarchism as its opposite in French poetry in the 1550s. The breakthrough of the petrarchistic sentimental rhetorics into prose and the process of its „defamilarisation“ by certain authors will be pointed out on the basis of the analysis of the use of particular forms of theatrical speech and lyric expression, then the analysis of vocabulary, syntactic constructions and figures of speech.
