ON TRANSLATING FREE INDIRECT SPEECH IN THE NOVELS MRS. DALLOWAY AND TO THE LIGHTHOUSE

This paper presents the features of free indirect discourse and the specifi c nature of FID itself. We deal with the contextual, semantic, syntactic and lexical indicators which may lead to misinterpretation and thus cause various problems in translating. The excerpts from the novels Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse are compared to its Serbian translations in order to examine the translators’ means of overcoming the diffi culties related to FID.
