THE ENCOUNTER OF HISTORY AND IDEOLOGY IN THE NOVEL THE SIEGE OF THE ST. SALVATION CHURCH BY RASTKO PETROVIĆ

Abstract

The relationship between story and history in the novel„Opsada crkve Sv. Spasa“ will be analyzed in this work. The focus is on dominance of the story over history because history itself is constituted through story about some event. Condition for anything in the world to secure its existence is to be told. History considered to be a story about one’s historic experience which is constantly changing, which is the the reason it does not ensure accuracy. The very concept of historic fact is being deconstructed because we note only what is worthy remembering, thus history is seen as a kind of ideology dictated from the center of power. The relationship between historic events and dreams, which on one side implicate ideological aspect of history, will be analyzed. Three historical events will be seen from another perspective, the perspective of the world of dream in which dream hunters and demons are acting. The fi ction layer is aff ecting the ideological connotation of the novel, thus creating a new Romanesque story about true events.
