AN INTERCULTURAL STYLE: SERBIAN L1 AND ENGLISH L2 INTERACTION IN REQUESTS
Keywords:
Intercultural Style Hypothesis, request, Serbian, EnglishAbstract
Тhe aim of this study was to test the Intercultural Style Hypothesis, put forward by Kasper and Blum-Kulka in the introduction to their 1993 volume Interlanguage Pragmatics, in relation to requesting behavior. The study looked into observable diff erences in L1 (Serbian) and L2 (English) requesting behavior and how these relate to speakers’ L2 profi ciency levels. The respondents were asked to complete a set of Discourse Completion Tasks; the responses were codifi ed and the fi ve elements considered in detail were the following: alerters, request strategies, syntactic downgraders, lexical and phrasal downgraders, and mitigating supportives. Statistical analyses of the data provide some support for the Intercultural Style Hypothesis.
