OPPOSITION “MAD”/“SANE” IN THE SOCIETY OF THE CULTURE OF DOMINATION AND ART AS A RESPONSE TO THE LIMITING MECHANISMS OF IT IN SHELAGH STEPHENSON’ S DRAMAS THE MEMORY OF WATER AND FIVE KINDS OF SILENCE

The possible solutions for the limiting mechanisms of the culture of domination, as suggested by bell hooks, Paolo Freire, Martin Luther King and Peter Sellers, are the critical awareness and response to life, the Prometheus-like fight, the creative maladjustment and the culture of focus. Also, art should reflect reality as it is and should “stretch our thoughts” so that we could think and act beyond set paradigms. Stephenson does not only reflect the reality but also shows that “madness” is a necessary balance for sense which should not be silenced by any mechanisms the society offers and by the adjustment to them.
