This paper examines the initiation rites in two short stories of Michel Tournier: Amandine, or The Two Gardens and Tom Thumb Runs Away. Using Mircea Eliade’s mythological approach, my analysis follows the multiple experiences of two children on the threshold of adolescence, Amandine and Pierre. Although different for boys and girls, initiation is a succesful adventure for both protagonists who “die” to childhood only to be born again to the disappointing world of adults.
